Clare County Council will have to undertake a speed audit of the County’s roads every 5 years, the Government has announced.
It also been announced that 80kph signs/speed limits on small rural roads are to be replaced with new ‘rural speed limit’ signage.
Many roads in rural Clare have speed limits of 80kmh, while the top speed on sections of many newer and larger dual carriageways can be as low as 60km/h.
The new signs will have a black circle with a diagonal line, similar to those used in Ireland before 2004. However, the limit will remain 80km/h. According to the Government, “These new signs will mean drivers will have to use their own judgement when it comes to the appropriate speed on boreens.”
