Blackouts possible as ESB staff vote for industrial action

electricityAlmost 90% of ESB staff have voted in favour of industrial action leaving the threat of power-cuts hanging over County Clare and the rest of Ireland in the run-up to Christmas.

The ESB group of five unions is meeting to decide its strategy after staff voted overwhelmingly to back industrial action in a row over a €1.6bn hole in the company’s pension fund.

The meeting will decide when to serve notice of industrial action, what form that action will take and whether to accept an invitation to talks issued by management last week. It’s understood that power cuts are unlikely during the Christmas holiday itself, however.
