Independent TD’s Mick Wallace and Clare Daly were arrested at Shannon Airport this afternoon after they allegedly breached a security perimeter.

It is understood they had attempted making their way to a remote taxiway where two US military aircraft were parked at the time.

It’s also believed that a rope ladder was found close to the terminal building they planned to search the aircraft.

Both have raised the issue of US military use of Shannon and have questioned why the Irish authorities don’t search military aircraft.

The pair were detained by airport police officers before being handed over the Gardaí.

The pair were released after being questioned at Shannon Garda station. A file is being sent to the DPP.

Speaking to 4FM following the incident, Deputy Daly said: “I believe it’s our function to represent human rights and justice in every opportunity we can.”

She accused the Government of  “slavishly adhering to an American agenda.”

“It costs a huge amount of money to carry these aircraft across and they’re not carrying fellas across on their holidays,” Ms. Daly added.

Speaking following the incident, Clare Fine Gael TD Pat Breen said: “Anybody entering restricted zones at Shannon for publicity given the current aviation security concerns must be dealt with accordingly.”
