Leon the Loggerhead Turtle who washed up on Seafield beach in County Clare last November will shortly be released back into the sea, it has been confirmed.

Galway Atlantaquaria has announced that it will host Leon’s big farewell this Sunday, to celebrate the journey she has made since her discovery on Seafield beach last November.

Since then the turtle has been involved in a rehabilitation program at the Aquarium and is now recovered enough that she can begin the next step, returning her to the wild.

The Aquarium will be hosting a variety of family friendly activities as well as opportunities to meet Leon and the carers who aided her recovery. Reduced admission prices will apply on the day from 11am-5pm.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) named the turtle Leon after the famous early 20th century shipwreck in Quilty.
