Former Clare teacher jailed for sexual abuse

Ennis Court House - © Pat Flynn 2014An 80-year-old Kilkee man, who sexually assaulted 11 pupils while he was principal of Moyasta National School in West Clare, has received an 11-year prison sentence with the last 5 years suspended.

Patrick Barry of Well Road denied charges of sexually assaulting former pupils at Moyasta National School over a 21-year period from to 1964 to 1985.

The accused’s victims were aged between 9 and 13 at the time of the assaults.

Judge Gerald Keyes imposed an 11-year sentence, one year for each of the 11 victims.

Speaking following today’s verdict at Ennis Circuit Court, the victims expressed their relief and described today’s sentencing as the day for justice.
