Drivers injured in separate crashes


The southbound lanes of the M18 were closed between Gort and Crusheen for a time this afternoon following a single vehicle collision.

A woman, the only occupant of the car, was taken to University Hospital Limerick for as a precaution. She is understood to have suffered only minor injuries.

The accident occurred at around 3.00pm about 5 kilometres south of Gort at Caherbroder. The woman is understood to have lost control of her vehicle which hit the concrete median before careering across both lanes of the motorway and into the crash barrier.

Units of the fire brigade from Gort and Ennis along gardaí and an ambulance attended the incident.

The road was left in a dangerous condition following the crash with oil from the cars engine spread across both lanes.

Staff from the National Roads Authority’s (NRA) motorway maintenance depot in Ennis cleared the spillage before they declared the motorway safe to reopen.

Meanwhile, last night, one woman was injured when she lost control of her car on the N18 near Bunratty. The single-vehicle collision happened at around 10.00pm on the northbound slip road.

The heavily pregnant woman had to be helped from her car by fire crews from Shannon station.

Two units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with ambulances from Limerick and Ennis attended the scene.

Gardaí are investigating both incidents.
