2013 All-Ireland Senior hurling medallists Nicky O’Connell and David O’Halloran have departed Davy Fitzgerald’s Clare panel.
Clonlara’s O’Connell has been one of the longest serving members of the panel having first made the breakthrough in 2008 as a shining light in the Clare U21 team that were controversially defeated in the Munster final before going all the way to win the All-Ireland a year later.
David O’Halloran received a call-up to the Senior squad at the beginning of 2013 alongside clubmate Shane O’Donnell following very impressive displays at minor and U21. The menacing corner-forward picked up the man of the match accolade following Clare’s 2-28 to 0-12 win over Antrim.
Neither of the pair have featured for Fitzgerald’s side during the 2015 NHL campaign. O’Halloran lined out at corner forward in the Banner’s two outings in the Waterford Crystal Cup while O’Connell has not played any competitive games for his county this year.
The Clare Champion states that “Nicky O’Connell and David O’Halloran have turned their backs on the Clare senior hurling panel”, before adding that the pair had been involved in a breach of discipline and refused to participate in a three-week programme of physical training as a result. No confirmation or statement has been released by the Clare management.
O’Connell became a viral hit earlier on in the month when he and his partner Esther Woods performed a cover ‘Love Is An Open Door’ from the hugely popular Disney movie ‘Frozen’.
