Feakle native, Kate Purcell has advanced to the live shows of RTÉ talent show ‘The Voice of Ireland’.

Purcell was teamed up with twenty five year old Rebecca Kelly from Wicklow performing a rendition of Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ in the Battle Stages of the show. The pair received some criticism due to the chosen song by their mentor Kian Egan.

Una Foden of The Saturdays questioned the choice of song and felt it didn’t suit either of the singers. “I absolutely love that song; it’s probably one of my all-time favourite songs. I would not have chosen if for either of you. Even together I don’t think ye gelled that well singing and I know you both gave it your all, but for me that song I wouldn’t have chosen it for either of them”.

Former frontman with The Blizzards, Niall Breslin known more commonly as Bressie agreed with Foden but was impressed with the vocal performance of the duo. “The song doesn’t work, the arrangement doesn’t work especially at the end the arrangement just got lost, vocally you didn’t and that’s what we’re here to look at. Whoever goes through, don’t let him [Kian] pick another song like that”.

Mentor of the pair Kian Egan stressed that picking the songs at this stage of the competition is difficult but he felt there was worse performances in the competition. “Picking songs for battles is not easy and there has been some car crashes but this hasn’t been the biggest one”.

Egan eventually decided to send Kate Purcell through to the live shows as he believed she was more ready out of the two for the next stage of the competition. In the aftermath of the performance, Clare woman Purcell was quick to defend her mentor’s choice of song. “I think Kian was right to throw a good challenge at us straight off”.

A resident singer at Dromoland Castle for over twenty years, Kate Purcell has an array of experience in the music industry having toured the US along with performing at a host of festivals all over Ireland. Singing at Dromoland is a truly delightful gig for Purcell “It’s just a most enjoyable gig, the proof of it is that I’m still here after twenty years”.

Kate is one of the most seasoned performers remaining in ‘The Voice of Ireland’ and if her experience and desire is anything to go by, she will certainly continue to remain in the show. She now joins near neighbour Sarah McTernan in the live-shows while Cristin Nolan appears on the Battles next week.
