Double-chasing Newmarket Celtic kept their dreams of collecting two pieces of silverware alive, after proving too strong for Burren Utd in the Prego Menswear Clare Cup semi-final.
Newmarket Celtic 5
Burren Utd 2
Venue: County Grounds, Doora.
A hat-trick from David McCarthy guaranteed Newmarket Celtic a place in the Prego Menswear Clare Cup final for the fourth season in a row.
Eoin Hayes was first to hit the back of the net to give Celtic a one goal advantage in the closing stages of the first half.
Former Clare Oscar Traynor captain, McCarthy picked up his first goal of the game not long into the second half. Burren replied nine minutes later through the boot of Evan Talty.
Daithí O’Connell secured the win for Celtic in the closing stages following two further goals from man of the match David McCarthy.
Prior to the game, Burren Utd posted on their Facebook page saying it would be a David vs Goliath clash and while they fought well at times, the result was never in any doubt as Newmarket Celtic were by far the superior team over the course of the ninety minutes.
Liam Murphy’s charges now face rivals Bridge Utd in the Clare Cup final which is scheduled for March 30th. Having lost out to Celtic in the race for the League title, the Sixmilebridge side will be determined not to let Newmarket take another trophy from them.
