While many Clare parents will already be very familiar with the sight and cost of funding their children’s Match Attax trading cards, the GAA and Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have decided to develop their own collectible card game.

Cúl Heroes is the new official trading card of the GAA/GPA which the organisations claim provide an innovative way of promoting Gaelic games, the players and the unique skills of Ireland’s national games.

For the first year the collection will include 468 footballers and hurlers from around the country and a collection book for storing each player.

Brand ambassadors James McCarthy and Anthony Nash attended the launch this week. Michael Murphy, Donegal and TJ Reid, Kilkenny are also brand ambassadors for this year.

It’s unclear whether Clare hurlers Conor McGrath and Tony Kelly will be considered by Clare’s young Match Attax collectors as worthy replacements for Premier League stars Wayne Rooney and Alexis Sánchez. While McGrath and Kelly are used to having defenders in their back pockets, only time will tell if Clare’s trading card fans will ditch Match Attax to have them in theirs.

A packet of Cúl Heroes trading cards (6 cards per pack) are on sale for €1.50/£1.20 throughout the 32 counties.   The standard collection folder with 10 cards is available for €6.50 with a deluxe collection also available which has one player from each county for €10.00.
