A call is being put to the people of Clare to attend a heart screening service in Kilmaley next weekend which may save your life.

In recent times, there has been a huge increase in the amount of deaths to fit and healthy young athletes due to undiagnosed heart conditions. On Thursday last Belgian footballer Gregory Mertens died three days after suffering a heart attack on the pitch, aged twenty four. A simple cardiac screen may identify such potentially life threatening conditions for people in Clare and beyond.

On Saturday May 9th from 10:00, Kilmaley and Lissycasey GAA Clubs are hosting a Cardiac Screening day. This event is organized by ‘Health Hearts Healthy Lives’, a mobile heart screening service, set up by former  Armagh Senior footballers John and Tony McEntee, to provide cardiac screening to help prevent sudden deaths in young people who may have “Sudden Adult Death Syndrome”. It will take place in the medical centre in the Kilmaley Day Care Centre.

Males and females aged between 14-35 years old are eligible to be screened. The screening takes approximately five minutes to complete and is a non-invasive, pain free procedure. Under 16’s require parental/guardian consent and each individual is required to complete a questionnaire.

The test will include a Screening Questionairre, an ECG and an Echocardiogram if required. All tests will be reported on by a cardiology consultant. Group screening cost is €45 to the individual (normal costs are €110 for one on one bookings). An echocardiogram if required is covered by the initial fee.
