Figures released by the Department of the Environment show that 724 dogs in the Clare Pound were either rehomed, reclaimed or transferred to dog welfare groups during 2014.
The dog welfare statistics for each county also show that 270 dogs were put to sleep at the Ennis-based facility, representing almost one in three dogs.
The facility, which is operated by the ISPCA, seized a total of 522 dogs during the year, which was the fourth highest figure nationally behind Dublin City (523), South Dublin (696) and Wexford (862). A total of 471 dogs were surrendered to the Pound, which was the highest figure nationally.
The number of stray and unwanted dogs coming into the pound system nationally was down by just under 1,000 dogs compared to 2013.
