Clare’s Motorsport enthusiasts are counting down the days to Sunday’s Circuit of Munster Rally which is part of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.
Kilmallock in Co Limerick is the venue for the weekend’s activity and Circuit of Munster Clerk of Course, Kieran Ambrose has laid out a 120km loop of stages in the Kilmallock area that is sure to test the drivers.
Over one hundred and twenty cars will line up to start the fourth round of the National Rally Championship with leader Donagh Kelly tipped to continue his recent good run of form in his Ford Focus World Rally Car. The Donegal native starts as top seed and he will be rejoined by regular navigator Kevin Flanagan in the hotseat as the pair look to extend their championship advantage.
Placed behind Kelly is multiple champion Niall Maguire. Maguire has recently purchased Declan Boyle’s championship winning Subaru but the Monaghan man is still unsure whether or not the car will be ready in time and he may be forced to use his slightly older S11 Subaru. He and long term co-driver Enda Sherry are fresh from a second place finish in the Cavan Stages and they will be hoping to go one step better in Limerick.
Clonakilty’s Kevin Kelleher lines up in third position having narrowly missed out on winning this rally last year. Alan Ring starts in fourth and the Castleisland man is keen to build on his Circuit of Kerry win last month. Derrek McGarrity and co-driver round out the top five with championship sponsor Kevin Barrett slotting in at six.
Other drivers aiming to cause an upset include Chris Armstrong who is third overall in the championship rankings with his Mark 2 Ford Escort. Local driver Ed O’Callaghan will hope to impress the home crowd while recent Cavan 2 wheel driver winner Jonathan Pringle is also in the mix along with Barry Ryan and Declan Gallagher who will be appearing in the Toyota GT86 he has been working on all year.
This is the fourth stage of the 2015 Triton National Rally Championships with the Ravens Rock, Sligo Stages Rally, Galway Summer Rally and Skibbereen Fastnet Rally all to take place to determine the 2015 champion.
