It may not have felt like it but County Clare was the sunniest spot in Ireland last month.
Met Éireann’s May monthly report shows that its station at Shannon Airport recorded a monthly total of 162.5 hours compared to Knock, County mayo, which recorded a national low of just 103.7hrs sunshine during the month.
May was a wet month however, with Shannon registering 172% of its average rainfall for the time of year. The average temperature was 1.3c below normal making Clare the joint coldest spot in the country alongside Claremorris and Belmullet, both in Mayo.
The outlook is brighter however, with Met Éireann predicting more seasonal weather from late Saturday into next week. High pressure will develop across the country bringing milder temperatures, drier weather and sunny spells.
