Clare jockey, Ian Queally has picked up the ‘At The Races Ride of the Month’ for May as chosen by visitors to the popular racing channel’s website.

Fanore teenager Ian Queally beat off competition from Adam Kirby, Ross Coakley, Chris Meehan and Sam Twiston-Davies. Queally will now receive a £500 cheque for his fantastic ride aboard ‘King of Oriel’ at Fairyhouse. A blistering comeback saw him make his way from the very back all the way to the top to claim a photo finish win.

Queally follows in the footsteps of Katie Walsh who won the award for April following an impressive showing on ‘Thunder and Roses’. Along with the £500, the winner gets to donate the same amount to a chosen charity.

There was further cause for Clare celebration with Ian’s success as Ennistymon woman Sinead Arkins won a £250 funded account courtesy of Paddy Power as she voted for the Banner jockey.

The up and coming jockey will have to put celebrations on the backburner for the moment as he is racing in Sligo this evening. At 19:00 he rides the J.H. Scott trained ‘Princess Harriet’. Further races at 19:30 and 20:00 follow aboard ‘Maontri’ and ‘Lomi’s Law’.

Speaking to The Clare Herald this evening, Ian Queally admitted his delight with being chosen for the award and was very grateful of the praise being put in his direction.
