fleadhThe countdown to Ennis hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in August 2016 well and truly got underway yesterday.

Officials from Clare County Council and members of the Abbey branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann gathered at the closing ceremony for the 2015 Fleadh in Sligo.

Addressing the event, Mayor of Ennis Pat Daly said: “I want to congratulate the people of Sligo on their successful hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Today, you pass on the torch to the people of Ennis.  In doing so, we have been tasked with matching your wonderful efforts, and Derry and Cavan before you, in hosting this landmark event.”

“Clare County Council – in conjunction with communities right across the County – is leading an initiative to promote Clare as a county of culture during 2016. The initiative will incorporate the development of a yearlong programme of cultural events, to be promoted nationally and internationally, around the Fleadh. This creation of this comprehensive programme will highlight and strengthen Clare’s reputation as the spiritual home of Irish traditional music and as a county of culture.

Ennis last hosted the event in 1977.
