Clare’s success has continued at the 2015 World Handball Championships in Calgary with two further titles secured by representatives from the Banner.
Kilkishen’s Chloe Philpott has won the Girls U11 Small Ball Singles title defeating Clóda Nic Con Midhe in the final 15-12 15-8. Philpott was also victorious in the Big Ball Doubles when she teamed up with Galway’s Sadhbh Ní Fhlaithearta.
Pat Donnellan also of the Kilkishen club overcame the challenge of Minnesota man Phil Kleineschay 21-13 21-14 to take home the Men’s Singles Small BallVeteran Gold Masters B (55+) title. His daughter Ella will team up with Clarecastle’s Doireann Murphy in the U17 Small Ball Doubles where the Donnellan family will hope to pick up another gold medal. Pat is an uncle to both Patrick Donnellan, the Joint Clare Senior Hurling captain and Kate Lynch, the Clare Senior Camogie captain.
In the Men’s U23 Challenger, Kilkishen’s Colin Crehan fell at the final hurdle to the much-talked about Martin Mulkerrins from Galway on a score of 21-15 21-13. Crehan had picked up good wins over Fergal Lalor and Niall O’Connor on his way to the final but the impressive Galwegian proved too big a challenge.
There was heartbreak for Clooney/Quin’s Natasha Coughlan as she lost on a tiebreaker in the Women’s C Singles Final. Laura Keaver of Waterford edged out Coughlan on a score of 21-2 14-21 11-5.
