The crew reported they had an elderly male passenger on board who was displaying symptoms of cardiac distress.

After consulting with a doctor on board and with medical professionals on the ground, the crew opted to divert to the closest suitable airport.

The pilot requested permission to divert and land at Shannon asking that emergency medical services be available on arrival.

The flight touched down safely shortly before 11.00am.

Airport fire crews were also mobilised as a precaution and crew checked the Airbus A330-300 jet braking system for overheating after landing.

The man was assessed on board by HSE ambulance paramedics before being transported by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The flight continued it’s journey shortly after 1.00pm.
