truck-731453_1280Clare Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy says the drop in commercial motor tax, which came into effect on Friday (January 1st 2016), will deliver benefits for the local economy and will make a major difference for road hauliers across Clare.

Arising from measures announced in Budget 2016, the number of rates of commercial motor tax has been reduced from 20 to 5 and will now range in cost from €90 to €900 per year, down from a maximum cost of €5,195.

“As an island nation, we need to ensure that our haulage and transport sector is supported,” said Senator Mulcahy.

“For many businesses, high transportation costs have inhibited their ability to expand their businesses. Changes to commercial motor tax resulting in a saving in some cases of over €4,000 will make a major difference for these businesses as well as road hauliers,” he added.

Senator Mulcahy continued: “Bearing in mind the considerable savings being made by businesses in transportation costs, I would hope to see a subsequent lowering in the costs of goods and services, which would in turn provide a significant boost to the Irish economy.”
