As a result, staff at the country’s most popular natural attraction have elevated the site’s safety status to Orange.

A spokesperson said: “Due to unexpected high winds we have now moved to Orange Weather Warning status which means we recommend you do not visit the Cliffs of Moher this afternoon.”

Last November, at the height of Storm Clodagh, all visitors and staff were evacuated as winds reached almost 180km/h.

Despite several similar closures last year, visitor numbers to the 700 foot high cliffs rose by 15.8% to over 1.2m.
