The Clare Senior Hurlers had four points to spare over Wexford in the Allianz National Hurling League Dicvision 1Bat Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday.
The Banner left it late however, to see off a spirited Wexford side who led for much of the game thanks to Harry Kehoe’s six pointed frees.
A strong final quarter from Davy Fitzgerald’s side in which they came from three points behind to win by four helped to maintain an impressive six wins from six competitive games in 2016.
Colin Ryan was Clare’s top scorer with 10 points, 8 of which came from frees, with defender Jack Browne chipping in with two well taken scores. Clare’s other scores came from Conor McGrath and substitute Bobby Duggan (0-2 each), David Reidy and John Conlon (0-1 each).
Wexford, aided by a strong first half breeze, went in at half time with a 1-6 to 0-7. The home side’s goal came from a penalty finished to the net by Mark Fanning.
Wexford started better in the second half but Clare finished the stronger with 8 of the last 9 scores.
Next up is the challenge of Laois in Portlaoise on Saturday week at 5pm.
