Woman recovering following M18 crash

A woman in her 20’s is recovering in hospital after she lost control of her car on the M18 near Dromoland this morning.

The single vehicle accident occurred shortly before midday near the northbound off-ramp at Junction 11.

The woman is understood to have lost control and skidded across the motorway before sliding into the central reservation and overturning. The accident happened around the same time as a heavy downpour of hail.

Three units of the fire service along with an ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit responded to the incident.

Emergency crews faced a delay in reaching the scene because inaccurate directions that were provided to emergency operators.

Gardaí responding from Shannon were first on the scene while other services and motorway maintenance crews arrived shortly afterwards.

The woman was able to climb out of the overturned car and was cared for at the scene until paramedics arrived. She was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

Diversions were put in place until the scene could be cleared.

Meanwhile, four people were injured in a two-car collision near Kilrush last night.

The accident happened on the Kilrush to Kilmurry McMahon road at around 8.30pm.

Two units of the fire brigade from Kilrush along with ambulances from Kilrush and Ennis responded to the incident.

Fire crews worked with paramedics to remove the injured from the vehicles. Four people were taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious.
