Riley’s Wave, in Ballard Bay near Doonbeg, attracts surfers and body-boarders from all over the world.

Other body-boarders and surfers helped the injured man from the water and onto the rocks while the alarm was raised.

The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard and the ambulance service were alerted and responded to the incident.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter winched the injured man on board and airlifted him to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The accident happened in the same area where a three times world champion body-boarder was injured almost 12 months ago.

36-year-old Australian Ben Player was also airlifted to hospital after he suffered a ruptured spleen in a fall on March 16th last.
