The Galway International Arts Festival and Róisín Dubh will host a performance by rockabilly queen Imelda May and special guest Damien Dempsey at the Absolut Big Top on Thursday, 21 July.
Imelda May’s rise has been unstoppable since she first entered our consciousness with the release of her 2008 album ‘Love Tattoo’. She expected to sell a handful of copies at gigs, but, after a life‐changing performance on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’, the album went triple platinum in Ireland. The singles ‘Johnny Got A Boom Boom’ and ‘Big Bad Handsome Man’ established May internationally, and led to appearances on US shows such as the ‘Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, not to mention an appearance at the 52nd Grammy Awards with Jeff Beck.
In 2010, she released her number one album ‘Mayhem’, followed by ‘Tribal’ in 2014. The rockabilly queen’s music fuses blues, jazz and the rebel spirit of the punk bands she admired growing up, such as The Clash and The Undertones. The Guardian described May as ‘A whipcracker of a voice….dangerously rocking.’
Damien Dempsey’s live shows are legendary and his heartfelt lyrics are delivered with passion and true conviction. In addition to his sold‐out solo shows across the country, he has also been invited to support some of music’s most iconic performers, from Bob Dylan to Sinead O’Connor, Willie Nelson to Morrissey. His sixth studio album, ‘Almighty Love’, was a huge critical and popular success. The Sunday Times described his performance as ‘Phenomenal’.
Expect an incredible live performance from two exceptional Irish performers at this year’s Galway International Arts Festival, which runs from the 11-24 July, 2016.
