Slieve Callan Windfarm temporary road closure gets green light

windmillA two mile section of road between Miltown Malbay and Connolly village is to face temporary closure for five weeks to facilitate works on the Slieve Callan to Tulla Road 110 KV Cable Route.

Clare County Council has approved a temporary road closure of this section of the R474 from 3rd May 2016 to 10th June 2016.

The Council this week wrote to groups and individuals who made submissions during the public submission process informing them of the decision to approve the temporary road closure.

According to the Council, “All submissions received have been considered and the traffic management plan for the road closure has been revised to address the issues raised in the submissions in so far as it is feasible to do so as follows:

Local Access: The road section to which the temporary closure applies will be open for public use outside of works hours, that is, from 3pm Saturdays to 7am Mondays & from 8pm to 7am Mon to Fri with passage through the works area controlled by traffic lights.  Local access to houses & premises in the works area of the closed road will be maintained throughout the day in so far as possible and will be managed through consultation with individual owners and occupiers. Contact can be made to 087 9164113 in this regard.

Emergency Services Access : All emergency services have been made aware of the route of the works & the road closure.  They will be given a direct route through the works without having to divert around the closure.

Access to Schools, for Disabled, Elderly & the Sick: Scheduled buses, school buses, school runs, transport for the disabled, those with special needs & the elderly will be marshalled through the road closure works area at pre-agreed times for regular users.   Contact should be made to 087 9164113 in this regard.

Reinstatement: Clare County Council will supervise all road reinstatement works to ensure that they are carried out satisfactorily.”

The Council confirmed that any additional temporary road closures will be subject to new road opening licence applications.

The 110 million euro Slieve Callan Windfarm investment is one of the largest of its kind in the history of the State.
