Units of the fire brigade from Kilrush along with ambulances from Ennistymon and Ennis responded to the incident. Gardaí closed the road to allow emergency crews deal with the collision.

One of the vehicles overturned and landed on its roof leaving its lone occupant trapped inside.

After the casualties had been assessed by paramedics, the Athlone based Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) air ambulance was requested to airlift one person to hospital.

The helicopter was able to land in a field close to the scene.

An elderly man was flown to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) while the second occupant of that car and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to UHL by road.

The N68 remained closed for several hours to allow for a forensic examination.

Gardaí from Kilrush are investigating the collision.
