Planning permission has been granted to Roche Ireland Ltd despite objections from groups including An Taisce.
Approval has been given to extend and refurbish an Environment Laboratory Building at the Clarecastle site. Clare County Council consented to the planning permission subject to some conditions.
An Taisce objected to the development for fear of contamination. A worry raised from a different party states that the distance between the new development and a site containing hazardous waste would be diminished.
Management of the Swiss company have confirmed waste water from the new Environment Laboratory Building would first be run through an on-site water treatment plant and would not be released into the public sewer, instead it would travel into the estuary after the waste water treatment.
Separately it is believed that a deal is close to being agreed for a new owner to purchase the Clarecastle site.
