The Kilrush RNLI lifeboat was called out this afternoon to assist a fisherman whose boat suffered engine failure in the Shannon Estuary.

The lone fisherman was on board a 16ft boat off the Kerry coast when his vessel suffered engine failure off Carraig Island close to Ballylongford off the Kerry shore.

The man raised the alarm himself at around 4.30pm when he contacted the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub station on Valentia Island, using his VHF radio.

The fisherman confirmed that he was the only person on board and that he was wearing his lifejacket.

The Kilrush volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew raced across the mouth of the Estuary to the scene and took by the boat on tow. The vessel was towed to Salleen Pier near Ballylongford.

The fisherman was unharmed.
