Clare secured the points in their opening game of the U16A All Ireland Championship on Sunday afternoon in Feakle despite a late rally from visitors Waterford.

The sides exchanges scores immediately at the start, Aoife Power and Annie Fitzgerald both on target with shots between the posts. Power added a brace only for the visitors to have matters levelled in the eleventh minute, Keisha Tobin and Fitzgerald both on target. Bridin Dinan edged the home side in front with a converted free just before Robyn Conway shot from distance to split the posts.

A Waterford attack saw the ball cleared out over the line with Tobin converting the resulting ’45. Power added a point to extend Clare lead to 2 points. Roisin Dunphy secured possession for the Déise winning the puckout before turning and running through, laying off a pass to Fitzgerald who raised the games first green flag as she fired to the back of the Clare net to give Waterford a one point lead.

This lead was short lived as the Banner outfit rallied, Waterford conceding a free in the middle with Dinan landing her shot outside the square, the ball was sent across the square with Mary Enright connecting perfectly to finish the corner of the Waterford net putting Clare back in front by two points. Conway and Dunphy traded points ahead of Clares second goal, Power striking on the run. Waterford added a brace from Tobin to have the Banner ahead by a goal 2-7 to 1-7 as the half time whistle sounded.

Clare were on the attack from the restart, Laoise Ryan with a powerful shot down the wing, collected by half time substitute Lyndsey Hayes who gathered and shot for goal only for Waterford’s goalkeeper Emma Norris to block and tip the ball out over the line. Dinan sent the resulting ’45 to the back of the net to put the home side ahead 3-8 to 1-7.

Abi Dunphy travelled forward having won her own puckout to pull a point back for the Deise. Clare hit the next 5 scores to leave it 4-12 to 1-8. The visitors broke the deadlock in the forty ninth minute when Fitzgerald split the posts. Fitzgerald followed up with a green flag just two minutes later.

Points from Clodagh Carroll and Sarah Leacy narrowed the deficit to 7 points with 5 minutes remaining. Conway fired over Clare’s last point in the 58 minute. However Waterford were not finished and mounted another attack forward, with Tobin raising a green flag two minutes into injury time. Waterford won the puckout and again raced forward, laying off to Tobin who responded with another green flag to see her side trail by two points. With another two minutes of injury to be played Clare stood firm and held off the visitors challenge to secure the win.

Clare’s best were Aoife Power who finished with a tally of 2-5 with Laoise Ryan and Roisin Minouge the standout players in defence. Their next outing is away to Dublin next Sunday who secured a 4-9 to 1-5 win over Limerick.

Kilmaley closed out the half with a point from Aida Griffey leaving a goal between the sides, Broadford 2-5 Kilmaley 1-5.

The East Clare side came into the game and the Kilmaley defence of Rebecca Cahill, Caroline Casey and Rebecca Connellan did well to hold the Broadford forwards at bay. Kilmaley’s midfield worked very hard and this began to pay off with two additional scores from Sinead O’Keeffe, leaving 3 points separating the sides.

Kilmaley’s Lana Brown was the forward who got her stick to a poor clearance by the Broadford keeper, which led to Kilmaleys second goal, tying up the game to even scores. The final 15 minutes of the game was an all-out battle for both sides, bodies were put on the line by both sides, with all players giving it every ounce of energy.
