The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard and an ambulance were sent to the scene after members of the public raised the alarm.

One passerby waded out into the waves with a lifebuoy and threw it to the man. The casualty was safely brought ashore where he was met by Irish Coast Guard first responders.

He was left shaken but otherwise uninjured and didn’t required hospitalisation.

Meanwhile, the Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter – Rescue 115 – has airlifted an injured tourist from an island in Kerry.

The French woman is understood to have sustained an injury in a fall on Valentia Island this afternoon. She has been airlifted to hospital in Tralee.
