Clare youngsters highlight the importance of Green Fleadh

FR_Edit_Media - Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2016 Launch - Gary Collins Photography_DSA_5652Postcards carrying important environmental messages and designed by young people from across County Clare have been distributed throughout Ennis to coincide with the start of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016.

Launched earlier this year, the Green Fleadh Postcard Competition for Primary Schools invited students to produce designs on the themes of litter and waste (recycling), energy, water and travel. The winning postcards, which have been selected by the Green Fleadh team, are designed by Eabha McNamara (Snr Infants, St Mochulla’s NS Tulla), Dylan Williams (1st Class, Ennis NS), Sarah Gorman (4th Class, Clarecastle NS) and Conor Farrell (5th Class, Corofin NS).

The postcards featuring the successful students’ name, class and school are being made available at a number of locations including the Fleadh Office Headquarters at Áras Contae an Chláir, the Fleadh Office in the Market, Ennis Tourist Office, Ennis Chamber of Commerce on O’Connell Street and the Visit Clare Office in Abbey Street Carpark. “The Green Fleadh team has implemented measures to keep Clare clean and to minimise the environmental impact of the Fleadh,” explained Karen Foley, Environmental Awareness Officer, Clare County Council.

Ms. Foley continued, “The visibility of the various Green Fleadh initiatives throughout Ennis over the coming days is key to encouraging the estimated 400,000 visitors to the town to look after the local environment, and to use the waste and recycling facilities as much as possible.

The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 Green Fleadh team is a partnership approach with the Environment Section of Clare County Council working in conjunction with Ennis Tidy Towns, Clarecastle Tidy Towns and the local business community. The Green Fleadh Programme is supported by the Southern Region Waste Management Office, EPA Local Authority Prevention Network Programme, EPA Green Business, Clean Technology Centre (Cork Institute of Technology) and the Limerick Clare Energy Agency.
