On Wednesday the first ever written account of the life and times of Garrett Barry’s life and rich contribution to his homeland will be released.

Garrett was a blind piper from Co Clare and the Inagh hall named in his memory hosts Wednesday’s book launch which begins at 8pm. Not alone is it a launch but it also pays tribute to the musician with a special concert.

Tim Dennehy presents a fantastic line-up, including Ronan Browne, Kevin Glackin, Bríd O’Donohue, Séamus Ó Rócháin, Eamon McGivney, Seán Talty, Cian Talty, Liam O’Brien, Tommy & Pádraic Keane, The McCarthy Family, Marian Curtin, Therese McInerney and Francis Cunningham.

Written by Howard Marshall the book chronicles the life of a blind piper who would have a big influence on the career of a certain Willie Clancy. Relatives and locals of Garrett spoke to the author during the process of weaving the text together and their tales are recounted in the pages of the book.

Marshall pieces together the history, people and places of West Clare with tale and legend to provide the first written account of Garrett Barry. Against a backdrop of continuing social strife, we are introduced to those who knew the musician and carried his memory, ensuring his rich contribution to local culture remains alive in Inagh. The text is illustrated with photography by Ben Howard.

Out of Darkness guides us through a world that has retained abiding traditions in poetry, folklore, music, dance and song. The book launch and concert takes place as part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann with tickets priced at €20.
