Newmarket Celtic’s Eoin Hayes netted the all-important goal as Ireland got off to a winning start in the UEFA Regions Cup.

A Munster/Connacht selection representing Ireland saw off the challenge of Italy regional side Lombardia with Hayes’ first half penalty proving to be the difference between the sides.

It gives the Gerry Davis managed side three points in their first outing of Group Seven and also puts them top of the table with further clashes against North East Macednonia and Maribor of Slovenia on Friday and Sunday respectively.

Hayes was joined in the side by fellow Newmarket man Stephen Kelly who lined out in the heart of the defence. The duo played the full ninety minutes and put in good performances which should see them hold on to their starting jerseys for Friday’s meeting with North East Macedonia.
