Over €17,000 has been raised for the family of a ten year old girl who died following the diversion of her flight to Shannon Airport on Christmas Eve.

Ten year old, Madra originally from Toronto was travelling with her three sisters onboard Air Canada flight AC-868 from Toronto to London at the time. During the flight, crew advised air traffic controllers that they needed to divert and land as soon as possible.

They opted to land at Shannon requesting that emergency medical services be standing by for their arrival with the pilot reporting they had a child in cardiac arrest on board. Upon arrival she was rushed to University Hospital Limerick where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Members of her family created a fundraising page on Wednesday to cover the costs of the repatriation and burial of the body. They had originally intended to raise Can$15,000 (€10,579) and at the time of writing they have exceeded this with Can$25,042 (€17,681) donated.

Appealing to the public, a sister of the deceased wrote “On Christmas Eve my 3 sisters and I left Toronto to spend Christmas with our extended family in Nigeria. Our mom flew ahead of us. Our beautiful youngest sister Madra (10) was with us. She took ill on the plane and despite the efforts of some kind medics on board they could not save her. We have been in Ireland since then, waiting to take our dear sister back to Canada. The Irish police and medical teams and Air Canada have been very helpful in this situation.

“Our family is a single parent family of 4 children so we do not have the funds to have a proper burial for our beloved Madra. Any help you can give will be deeply appreciated by our family during this time of devastation and grief. Madra was the light of our lives, she brought joy and happiness to our household and we will never be the same without her, however we will keep her memory alive”.

A local doctor who attended the scene on Christmas Eve invited the girl’s three sisters to stay at their family home in Co Clare over the holidays. The body reposed at the doctor’s home on Tuesday evening.
