Members of the Irish Coast Guard from Clare’s three volunteer stations attended the funeral on Saturday of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick.

The 45-year-old mother-of-one died tragically when Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 was lost last week off the Mayo coast.

Three other crews members – Mark Duffy, Ciarán Smith and Paul Ormsby are still missing.

The crew of Dublin based Rescue 116 had been sent to assist their colleagues from Sligo (Rescue 118) who were undertaking a long-range medical evacuation (medevac) from a fishing vessel off Mayo.

Rescue 116 had been requested to provide communications topcover when the Irish Air Corps was unable to facilitate a request to provide a CASA fixed-wing aircraft.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Captain Fitzpatrick in Glencullen Co Dublin yesterday. Ironically, the church where the service was held is located on the R116 road in south Co Dublin.

President Michael D Higgins was among the mourners who also included Irish Coast Guard members from all over the country including Doolin, Killaloe and Kilkee.
