Two people walking the popular cliff trail at Aill Na Searrach near the Cliffs of Moher reported seeing a light close to the bottom of the steep cliff.

On arrival, rescue teams abseiled down to the location where they found a young German woman in a small tent.

The woman was helped to the cliff top shortly before midnight and taken by the Coast Guard to nearby Doolin where accommodation was arranged for her.

The area is considered to be extremely dangerous however people often use a goat track to reach the bottom.

There have been numerous rockfalls in the area including one in 2000 which claimed the lives of two charity abseilers from Cork.

Rescue teams had to abseil down the same cliff just last Sunday to recovery the body of a man from the rocky shore below. The incident was a personal tragedy.
