New Rules Ensure Mobile Phone Coverage At Sea

Business & Finance - Technology

Being at sea should no longer mean that you can't use your mobile phone.

Earlier today the EU Commission announced that it was harmonising the technical and legal conditions for on-board mobile phone usage. This decision also means that future applications like remote tracking of freight will become possible.

EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes said, "Tens of millions of people who travel and work on ships anywhere in European territorial waters will be able to use their mobile phones without problems of interference as a result of the new rules just adopted by the Commission".

The new rules should put an end to the patchwork of twenty seven different sets of national legislation on mobile phone coverage on cruise liners, cargo ships and ferries in European territorial waters.

Thats a great news. It feels so frustrating not to contact with the rest of the world whilst sailing with the ferry. I'm a regular traveller with the dover ferry and several times I felt the urgent need to use my mobile. I heartily welcome the decision of introducing onboard network coverage.
