Body found in search for missing Japanese couple

A body has been found during the search for a missing Japanese couple in Co Clare.

The discovery was made at around midday by divers from Kilkee sub aqua clubs brought in to assist in the search which has been ongoing since last Tuesday.

Mr Eiji Takagi (63) and Ms Ushio Azaki (61) were last seen in the area of Byrnes Cove near Georges Head in Kilkee.

The body was found near Georges Head just hours into the sixth day of the search which has been concentrated around the Georges Head and Chimney Bay areas of Kilkee.

The body was taken on board a rescue boat and brought ashore at the slipway in Kilkee and is expected to be removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will be carried out later.

The pair were due to fly home to Tokyo from Shannon via London but never checked in for their flights.

The operation has involved units of the Coast Guard from Kilkee, Doolin and Ballybunnion as well as the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter.

Civil Defence units from Clare, Dublin, Laois and Tipperary along with Limerick Marine Search and Rescue have also been involved in the search.

Dive clubs involved Kilkee, Burren, Ennis, Aughinish, Lough Derg.

The operation led by Kilkee and coordinated by Cormac McMahon regional dive officer for the South West area.
