The women managed to raise the alarm themselves reporting that the water had entered the car and had reached the steering wheel.

Specially trained fire service Swiftwater Rescue Technicians (SRT’s) carried the women through the flood to safety.

They were cared for at the scene in a fire service vehicle until a HSE ambulance arrived. Gardaí also attended the incident.

The casualties were assessed at the scene by HSE ambulance paramedics but despite being shaken, wet and cold, they were otherwise unharmed.

Last night, fire crews from Ennis rescued a women from her car after it stalled in a flood near Clooney in Clare.

Clare County Council had listed the road as being flooded and has again warned motorists about the danger of attempting to drive through floodwaters.

Director of Services Anne Haugh said: “The advice continues to be not to drive through flooded road situations.”
