It’s understood that two cars collided in the southbound lanes before one spun out of control and mounted a crash barrier. The mangled wreckage of the car came to a stop in the middle of the motorway.

Four units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with ambulances from Ennis and Limerick responded to the incident.

Fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to free the women from the wreckage. The first victim was cut from the car about 45 minutes after the collision occurred.

Gardaí and motorway maintenance crews closed the motorway at Junction 11 and rerouted traffic via Newmarket on Fergus.

The injured were taken to University Hospital Limerick where they are being treated for non-lifethreatening injuries.

The two male occupants of the second car, understood to be non-Irish nationals, escaped uninjured.

The motorway was reopened shortly after 6.00pm while Gardaí from Shannon are investigating the incident.
