M18 collisions following hail downpour

Emergency services from Clare and Galway dealt with separate collisions on the M18 this afternoon.

A single-vehicle collision was reported on the motorway at around 2.30pm south of Gort, Co Galway.

Two units of the fire brigade from Gort were sent to the incident along with an ambulance an Gardaí from Ennis.

Three units of the fire service from Ennis were also mobilised to the collision.

On arrival at the scene, fire personnel from Gort noticed another incident on the northbound lanes a short distance away.

Gardaí and fire crews travelling to the original call stopped to deal with the second collision which involved two cars.

One person was removed to hospital from the first incident while there were no injuries reported in the other collision.

Both incidents occurred during or after a heavy downpour of hail with all three cars involved skidded of the road.

Meanwhile, while fire crews from Ennis were dealing with the second collision incident, they were alerted to a crash near Corofin in Co Clare.

The single-vehicle incident happened on the Ennistymon road about two kilometres from the town.

It’s understood that a number of people were hurt when their car collided with a tree however their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Two people were removed to hospital fro treatment.
