Work is to begin on the construction of twenty four new classrooms at St Finnachta’s National School in Sixmilebridge in the coming months.

The school has received confirmation that the Building Project is proceeding to Stage 3: Tender Action. This is the last stage before the commencement of construction. The short-listed building contractors will be required to submit their tenders in the coming weeks before the successful contractor is appointed and works can begin.

Opened in 1934 the school is to be replaced by a new state of the art building. 526 pupils are enrolled in the Sixmilebridge school which has forty seven members of staff.

A contractor will be appointed in the coming months and staff are hopeful works will commence at the beginning of 2017.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey explains why the works are essential. “Prefabricated classrooms have been used to accommodate increases in enrolment over the years, it was clear that a new building was not just desirable but an absolute necessity.”

He added “I have worked with the Board of Management and School Principal, Gareth Heagney for many years on this project and it’s exciting now that construction work will be beginning in the near future”.
