A transatlantic jet had to carry out a low fly-past at Shannon Airport this morning so air traffic controllers could check whether the plane’s landing gear was down.

Delta Airlines flight 406, a daily scheduled service between New York and Shannon, was on approach to Shannon shortly after 10.00am when the crew alerted controllers to a possible issue.

The pilot confirmed they had received an ‘unsafe indication’ after they had deployed the landing gear.

The crew carried out a low fly-past over the runway so controllers in the tower could check the gear. After it was confirmed that the gear appeared down locked the plane repositioned for  a safe landing.

Airport fire crews were standing by as a precaution. The flight crew did not declare an emergency however.

The flight landed safely at 10.24am while the aircraft was able to continue with the return leg to New York with just a slight delay.

Its understood the false indication resulted from a faulty light on the flight-deck.
