Jet diverts to Shannon with sick passenger

A transatlantic flight has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon after a passenger fell ill on board.

Air France flight AF-344 was travelling from Paris to Montreal in Canada when the crew declared a medical emergency.

The Boeing 777-330 jet just crossed the Irish east coast when the crew advised controllers of their emergency and requested permission to divert to Shannon.

The pilot also requested that an ambulance be standing by for the aircraft when it landed.

The flight landed at 3.10pm and was met at the terminal by emergency medical services.

The passenger was removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The flight continued its journey shortly before 5.00pm.

Earlier, a flight carrying US military personnel unexpectedly returned to Shannon Airport this afternoon after turning around over the Italian Alps.

The Omni Air International flight had left Shannon shortly before 9.00am having arrived earlier from the US.

Two hours later, the Boeing 767-300 jet turned around over the Alps north of Treviso in Italy after travelling almost 2,000 kilometres.

Its understood the jet suffered a technical issue with one of its engines.
