A record number of applicants were received for the fourth series of the RTÉ show. The McCarthy family from Inagh will be flying the Clare flag as they try to win the €15,000 in prize money and the title of Ireland’s Fittest Family.

Jason McCarthy lined out at wing-back for the Clare U21 hurlers in 2016 but over the coming weeks he will be competing in what has been described as “Ireland’s toughest television challenge”. His brother David is an All-Ireland winning accordion player that gave many performances during the Fleadh in Ennis this summer. At sixteen Aidan is the youngest McCarthy family member taking part.

Their mother Patricia at forty eight years of age looks set to become one of the fan favourites in the fourth series, her sons are in agreement that she is the boss but feel she’ll hold her own against representatives from the other families.

Sixmilebridge’s Davy Fitzgerald continues his role as a coach on the show with Alan Quinlan and Anna Geary doing battle with Davy along with newcomer Stephen Hunt.

The McCarthy family appear in the season premiere which airs on Sunday at 6:30pm on RTÉ ONE.
