New campaign to stand up to gender based violence

The Clare Local Area Network will launch this year’s International 16 Day campaign against gender based violence at the Civic Rooms, Waterpark House, Drumbiggle, Ennis on Friday (25th) from 12pm until 2pm.

This year’s chosen theme is ‘Violence Against Women is everyone’s business’. It is a free event and all members of the public and local agencies are encouraged and welcome to attend.

CEO of SAFE Ireland, Sharon O’Halloran is one of the guest speakers at the event. She has worked in the community and voluntary sector for over twenty years and has a wide knowledge and expertise in organisational change, leadership, social change and violence against women.

Other guest speakers include, Dr Máire Finn who has worked as a GP in Ennis for over 16 years. Originally from Co Wexford, Dr Finn studied medicine in Galway where she developed a keen interest in women’s medicine and women’s health in general.

Clare Haven Services, will speak about the services which they provide to women in Clare and statistical information relating to women who use their services. There will be music and entertainment from Anne Rynne and Suara Community Singing Group. There will be a light lunch provided.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from the November 25th the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to the December 10th, International Human Rights Day.

The Clare Local Area Network is a local partnership and includes, the HSE, Tusla, Clare Mental Health Services, An Garda Siochana, Mid West Rape Crisis Centre, Clare Haven House, Clare Women’s Network, Primary Health Care Programme and Clare County Council Housing Department and Money Advice and Budgeting Services.
