The badly decomposed remains were found around midday at Tyrone, Kilcolgan by a person out walking.

The discovery was made while search teams continued their efforts to locate missing Limerick woman Maria Hennigar who lived in Doolin.

The remains were removed to University Hospital Galway where a post mortem and efforts to identify the woman will take place.

Gardaí are expected to use dental records in an effort to establish whether the body is that of the missing woman.

Investigating officers in Clare have been in contact with their colleagues in Galway in relation to the discovery.
