€284,000 for road safety measures in Clare’s communities

zebra-crossing€284,000 has been allocated to Clare County Council under CLÁR 2016 to implement road safety measures in the vicinity of schools and community facilities at 29 locations throughout County Clare.

Michael Ring TD, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development made the announcement as he confirmed the allocation of €8.24 million in funding to 651 projects nationally. The projects being undertaken by Clare County Council include the provision of variable speed signs, pedestrian crossings and speed reduction zones.

Councillor Bill Chambers, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council has welcomed the funding allocation. “The grant allocation will enable the Local Authority to fund important road safety initiatives in order to facilitate safe access to and from schools for children and the safe use of other community facilities by the local community and visitors alike. I look forward to the works getting underway.”

Leonard Cleary, Director of Services, Rural Development explained, “The CLÁR programme plays an extremely important role in addressing issues such as safety at schools and community centres. In the case of this year’s funding allocation, Clare County Council has received €284,000 to undertake 29 separate road safety projects, including the provision of pedestrian crossing points and the installation of driver feedback display signs, child safety signs and flashing amber safety lights. The works will be jointly coordinated and undertaken by the Rural Development and Physical Development Directorates of Clare County Council.”

Anne Haugh, Director of Services, Physical Development, said, “The purpose of these proposed works is to improve pedestrian safety for the pupils, parents and staff of the various schools, as well as to introduce traffic calming and general road safety measures in rural communities and some urban locations. Now that the funding allocation has been provided, Clare County Council will set about developing a programme of works.”

The works benefitting under CLÁR 2016 include:

  • The provision of pedestrian crossing points as a safety measure at Miltown Malbay NS, Kildysart NS, Inagh village on the R460 to Miltown Malbay, and Tuamgraney NS
  • The provision of Flashing Amber Safety Lights at Tulla NS on the R462, Mullagh junction (Annagh), R478 at Lahinch, Kilrush Community School, Moveen NS on the R487, N67 Lahinch, Lissycasey NS, Ballynacally NS, Cahermurphy NS on the L2082, Lisdoonvarna NS on the N67, Carrigaholt NS on the L2002, Cloonanaha NS on the R460, Kilmihil NS on the L2082, Doonbeg NS on the N67 and Miltown Malbay NS on the L-2092
  • The provision of child safety signs Moyasta, Breaffa and O’Gorman St. in Kilrush
  • The provision of Driver Feedback Display Signs as a safety measure at New Quay NS on the N67, Tubber NS on the L1010, O’Callaghans Mills NS, at Shorepark on the Coast Road (near the Kildysart Childcare Centre, Elderly Daycare Centre and the Community Centre), R487 Cross, Mullagh NS on the L-209, and in advance of the bridge R483 in Cree.
