A minority of drivers do not observe the speed limit outside the county’s schools and some people drive recklessly even when children are entering and leaving a school building.

Clare Independent TD Michael Harty is pushing this message he welcomed the provision of €284,000 for road safety measures near schools and community facilities at twenty nine locations in Clare.

“I welcome the provision of variable speed signs, pedestrian crossings and speed reduction zones. The development of pedestrian crossing points, the installation of driver feedback display signs, child safety signs and flashing amber safety lights – all contribute to greater child safety. The announcement by Michael Ring, Minister for Regional Development under the Clár programme is positive news for our rural schools,” he said.

Dr. Harty urged drivers to complement this good work with better behaviour behind the wheel. “2016 has been a terrible year on our roads and there is an onus on all of us to ensure that 2017 will see a significant reduction in the number of deaths and injuries. We can all make our contribution by better and safer driving around our local parishes, villages and towns,” he said.
