United Airline flight UA-67 had left Shannon earlier and was en route to Chicago when the crew told controllers they wished to return to the airport.

It’s understood the crew reported a possible mechanical issue and have returned to have the problem investigated.

Airport fire and rescue crews were placed on standby and were backed up by units of the local authority fire service from Shannon and Ennis.

Several units from Shannon were standing by at the airport while fire crews from Ennis were mobilised to a holding point on the close the M18 at Dromoland.

A number of National Ambulance Service resources and Gardaí were also deployed to the airport.

The incident was downgraded from ‘Full Emergency’ to ‘Priority Landing’ shortly before the plane was due to touch down.

Emergency services were not stood down and remained on standby at the side of the runway.
